Alan has had grease under his finger nails since the early 70’s when due to necessity he learned how to fix his own 1968 VW Beetle. With some basic hand tools and an early version of how to fix your Beetle for Dummies book, he began doing tune ups and other minor fixes through high school. Then on a road trip with his buddies to Mexico in 1972, the car developed a noticeable lack of power and the engine had to be removed, a valve job done and then reinstalled. With the help of the book, a local machine shop in Monterey California and a whole lot of busted knuckles and sweat, he was able to piece it back together and drive said car to Mexico and then 3 month later back to Toronto. Thus began that thought of pursuing auto mechanics as a career choice. Beginning in 1974 he got his first apprentice job at Willy’s Downtown VW on Brunswick Avenue, where he began the long trek to learning the trade. Four years later he wrote and achieved his Class A Automotive accreditation with an Honours-Interprovincial status. In 1981 he with his younger brother Glenn opened Glennalan Motors in Downsview where they’ve strived to give the consumer the best quality repair for the best possible price.
Since honesty and integrity have been forefront, they were approached by the Automobile Protection Association to be part of their recommended repair facility group. Shortly after this Alan started appearing on the “Lemon Aid Show” at Rogers Cable as an “On Air” automotive expert for the next ten years. Starting in 2001 he hosted “Car Talk” on Canada’s largest radio station CFRB for the next 9 years taking callers car questions and handing out great automotive advice every week. Today he remains a regular panelist on AutoShop on CP/24 and is the co host with Dave Redinger on Dave’s Corner Garage, heard every Saturday on Zoomer Radio AM 740.
Alan can be reached either by calling his shop Glennalan Motors @ 416-665-6230 by email or on the Glennalan Motors Facebook Page.
